Adolescence is developmentally unique and a time of great growth intellectually, socially, and emotionally. OLGCS offers small class sizes with a maximum of fifty students per grade level split between two classrooms. Small class sizes provide students with extra attention and allow us the ability to create individualized learning plans. 6th through 8th Grade students are considered the "leaders" of the school. Students are involved in student-initiated learning, decision making, and are role models and mentors for our younger students. While fostering independence, teachers continue to refine study skills, nurture empathy, build leadership and prepare students for High School and life. Each teacher has a core curriculum guide (provided by the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana) specific to the applicable grade level. The guides enrich the curriculum standards determined by the Indiana Department of Education. OLGCS is STEM education certified and is a hands on approach to learning. STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators.
Homework is assigned at the discretion of the teacher. Such assignments are appropriate for the students' age and grade-level.
Middle School students follow a block schedule for the specials courses: P.E./Health, Art, Music and Technology. They spend one quarter attending one of the specials daily.
Students will cover the following subjects: Religion, Math (Standard, Pre-Algebra, Algebra), English, Social Studies, Science, Language Arts, Spanish, Technology, Library, Music, Art, Physical Education, Health.
Parent/teacher conferences are held once each year. The conference is held in the fall. The academic year consists of two semesters. Each semester is made up of approximately two ten week grading periods. Students in grades 7 & 8 take a final exam at the end of each semester.
